Doctors in London have become the first in the world to cure blindness in children born with a rare genetic condition (Leber congenital amaurosis) using pioneering gene therapy. The condition is due to a defect in the AIPL1 gene, Those affected are certified as blind from birth. After injecting healthy copies of the gene into the children’s eyes with keyhole surgery, four children can now see shapes, find toys, recognise faces and even read and write.
